Making a Spanish Polychrome Sculpture
Seventeenth-century Spanish polychrome sculpture was intended to appear as lifelike as possible. Compared to bronze or marble statues, sculpted and painted wooden figures--often with glass eyes and wigs--achieve a remarkable realistic effect. Artists specialized in particular Spanish polychromy techniques, such as estofado: painting and incising to create rich silk fabrics with raised patterns in gold and silver used for the garments, and encarnaciones: blending and applying of oil paint for lips, hair, and modulations of the skin. Learn more about these techniques in this video from the Getty Museum. Sculpting a Portrait Bust-Entertainment--Lynn Forbes Visual Dynamics Class Instruction Method
This is a fast paced, entertaining look into how professional sculptor Lynn Forbes creates masterpiece sculpture... Her Visual Dynamics teaching technique is used in sculpting portrait busts and figurative sculpture using ceramic clay which is usually bisque fired and often turned into bronze sculpture for commissions. While it is amazing to see how quickly and easily Forbes creates highly realistic portaits that seem to breathe out the very personality of the subject... what is even more amazing is to hear what students in the Lynn Forbes classes are saying (on other videos by the Lynn Forbes School of Sculpture, located in Carlsbad, California). Her classes focus not only on portraits, but on all figurative sculpture including nudes and fragments. In this video one observes Lynn in action and hears a description of the Visual Dynamics technique--along with a summary of what sets it apart from other teaching and instructional methods.

How to make Gyokugan (玉眼) Japanese eyes for wood sculpture
An instructional video for creating "Gyokugan" eyes for a yogesi-zukuri (hollowed) wooden sculpture. This technique was perfected and has been in use by Japanese sculptors (busshi) for almost one thousand years. Original materials mainly involved curved and painted rock-crystal lenses (glass was rarely used). The materials used here, however, are commercially available and inexpensive, but the technique is very much the same that was pioneered in the Heian and Kamakura eras of Japanese art history.
