Matisse / Picasso - Twin Giants of Modern Art
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) are the acknowledged twin giants of modern art, between them having originated many of the most significant innovations of twentieth-century painting and sculpture. This film is an encounter with the two pioneers, two adventurers in painting, who developed a close and complex relationship. With archive footage and photos and a wealth of examples of their work, the documentary traces the separate paths Matisse and Picasso followed, looks at their points of contact, and sheds light on how the genius of each artist nourished that of the other. The Picasso Turns 40!
The first (and rustiest) of Chicago's what-the-hell-is-that outdoor sculptures celebrates the big four-oh. I can remember when it was installed in front of the Civic Center (since renamed for Daley), which is made of the same purposely rusting Cor-Ten steel. How Picasso got our famously conservative former mayor Richard J. Daley to approve this thing is still a mystery. But the Chagall mosaic, the Calder flamingo, the Miro sculpture facing the Picasso across Washington St., the Batcolumn at the Social Security Building, Harry Bertoia's singing metal rods in front of the Aon Building, the Agora in Grant Park, the Pritzker pile-of-metal-shavings bandshell -- they all owe their existence to Picasso's woman/bird/monkey (he never said exactly what it was supposed to represent). Lorado Taft and Daniel Chester French must be crying in their heavenly beers.
